Spray Foam Insulation
New Englanders have a reputation for hardiness, and the climate could be a good reason for that! New England homes need to be as hardy as the people they shelter. Insulation, along with air sealing, is key to making a home comfortable.
Why Your New England Home Needs Insulation
Improving insulation in an existing house can improve your comfort levels and reduce your energy bills. The US Department of Energy (DoE) recommends the following insulation levels for New England:
-
Ceiling/Attic: R-49 to R-60
-
Walls: R-11 to R-22
-
Floor: R-25 to R-30
-
Basement or Crawlspace Walls: R-11 to R-19
In New Hampshire and Maine, new homes must meet energy code requirements. These requirements are based on DoE recommendations and include not only insulation levels but window, door and heating/cooling components as well.
Insulation Performance: What is an R-Value?
The "R" in R-value stands for Resistance. R-value is a way of measuring how well a material resists heat flow. The higher the R-value per inch of thickness of the material, the better the resistance to heat flow. One of the best insulating materials on the market today is closed cell polyurethane foam. This spray on insulation comes in at R-6.5 per inch of thickness when it's installed. This is pretty much double that of fibrous insulations like fiberglass and cellulose (R-3.2 to R-3.8).
The Benefits of Polyurethane Spray Foam
Closed cell polyurethane spray foam is a popular option for insulation due to its high R-value and ability to stop air leakage and moisture penetration once applied. Although it is a more expensive option, it can drastically increase the energy efficiency and comfort level of a home or building. Spray foam eliminates air movement inside wall cavities by forming a fully adhered, seamless insulation and air barrier system.
Simplified Green Homes offers a wide range of insulation products to suit the specific requirements of your house. We work with homeowners throughout New Hampshire and Maine and Northern Maine to improve their home comfort with spray foam insulation. We are also a recognized contractor for financing and incentive programs in both states.
